What the natal chart shows

The natal chart is the blueprint of the sky at the moment of birth. The planets spread across the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve houses, and the angles between them form the aspects.

The ascendant

The sign that was rising over the eastern horizon the minute you were born. It changes every two hours or so, which is why the exact time is needed: an hour off carries it into the next sign.

The houses

Twelve sectors of the chart, each an area of life. By default I divide by Placidus, the most used. You can choose whole signs or equal houses. Beyond the polar circle Placidus does not apply, and there I switch honestly to whole signs instead of drawing the impossible.

The aspects

The angles between planets: conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition. They show how the parts of the chart speak to one another.

The twelve houses of the chart

The houses are twelve sectors of the chart, and each one covers an area of life. A planet that lands in a house colours exactly that sphere. Here is what each one holds.

The planets in the chart

The planets are the characters of the chart. Each one carries a force in you, and the sign and house it sits in say how and where that force shows.

Aspects: how the planets talk to each other

An aspect is the angle between two planets. It shows whether their forces get along or clash. Five main angles read like this.

House systems: Placidus, equal and whole sign

A house system is the way of slicing the chart into twelve sectors. The planets and signs don't move, only the house borders do, so the same planet can land in different houses. Three systems to choose in the form.

Placidus - the most common: houses of different sizes, tied to the birth time and latitude, set by default. Whole signs - the oldest and simplest: each house equals a whole sign and the first starts at the ascendant's sign. Equal houses - all thirty degrees from the ascendant. At high latitudes Placidus distorts, and there whole signs are the honest choice.

How I calculate your chart

The sky does not ask what you believe. In the minute you drew your first breath, the planets stood where they stood, accurate to a degree. That is what I take: exactly as it was, no rounding, no guesswork.

The birth time I set to how the clocks actually ran that year and in that city. The hands have been moved more than once, and by now no one remembers. That is why under each calculation I note which time zone I used.
