A zodiac sign is a thirty-degree slice of the circle, the one the Sun crosses in roughly a month. Three things describe it. The element sets the temperature: Fire for drive, Earth for matter, Air for thought, Water for feeling. The cross sets the manner: cardinal to open a season, fixed to hold it, mutable to hand it on. The ruler sets the motive: Mars wants to act, Venus wants to please, Mercury wants to understand, Saturn wants to build.
The three combine without ever repeating: there is exactly one cardinal Fire sign, one fixed Water sign, one mutable Earth sign. Character comes out of that mix, which is why two signs of the same element are nothing alike. Aries and Leo both burn, one in the starting and one in the lasting.
Finding your sign, and the cusp case
Your Sun sign is read off the birth date, and every sign's dates are on the cards above. There is only one real difficulty: the boundaries shift by a day from year to year, because the Sun does not change sign at midnight sharp. Born on the first or last day of a sign you are on the cusp, and only a natal chart calculated by year, time and city settles it.
And the honest part: the Sun sign is a mold, not a program. The Moon says what you feel when nobody is watching, the ascendant what people see of you first, Venus and Mars how you love and how you fight. Two Leos born the same day in two different cities do not share a sky.

Twelve, because the zodiac circle measures 360° and is cut into equal slices of thirty degrees. The Sun crosses one per month or so, from Aries to Pisces, and closes the round in a year.
Which is the rarest zodiac sign?
None of them is rare in the sky: every sign holds exactly the same thirty-degree slice. What varies is birth statistics, with slightly fewer births in January and February than in summer depending on the country. That says nothing about character and nothing about astrology.
