What the ascendant is
The Sun shows who a person is inside. The ascendant, how they come across from the outside before the first word. It is the point of the zodiac that was rising over the eastern horizon at the hour of birth, which is why it needs the time and the city: the sky differs for every point on Earth.
The rising sign changes every two hours or so as the Earth turns, and in one day the whole zodiac passes across the horizon. That is why two Taurus born the same day at different hours read differently from the doorway: one slips in unnoticed, the other fills the room.

Why does the ascendant need the exact time?
Because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours as the Earth turns. The Sun barely moves in a day, but the horizon runs through the whole zodiac. An hour off pushes the ascendant into the next sign, so here the time matters more than the date.
I do not know my exact birth time. What now?
Then the ascendant cannot be worked out honestly, and I will not make it up. Check your birth certificate or ask your family, the time is often there. The Sun, Moon and planets in the signs will still be right, they barely depend on the time.
Are the ascendant and the zodiac sign different?
Yes. Your zodiac sign is where the Sun stood on your birthday, one per month. The ascendant depends on the time and the city and shifts every couple of hours. That is why two people of the same sign can be unalike: their ascendant is different.
