What's actually happening in the sky
Mercury doesn't turn around. Earth passes it on the inside lane of the solar system, and from where you're standing that overtaking makes the planet look like it's drifting backward across the stars. It's the same trick your eyes play when your train pulls past a slower one and the other train seems to roll in reverse. Astronomers call it apparent retrograde motion, and they can calculate it to the minute.
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the quickest one in the sky, so Earth laps it more often than it laps anything else. That's why you get three or four of these stretches in a year instead of one, and why each of them runs about three weeks.
What to do with it
I'll be straight with you, because that's what you came here for. Nobody has ever shown a link between Mercury's apparent backward motion and broken laptops, lost luggage or deals that fall apart. I'm not going to promise you one. Lying isn't part of what I do.
Here's what these three weeks are honestly good for. Mercury is the planet of words, messages and agreements, so a few times a year the sky hands you a standing reminder to reread the email before you send it, confirm the time and place of the meeting, and go back to the conversation you've been putting off. That habit is worth having in any month of the year. Most of us just need a reason to start, and this is a good one.

What is Mercury retrograde, really?
An optical effect. Mercury never reverses direction. Earth overtakes it on a shorter, faster orbit, and from here the planet appears to slide backward against the stars, the way a train you're passing looks like it's rolling the other way.
