The Gebo rune
Sound «Г», image: gift, exchange.
Meaning of the Gebo rune
The gift and the exchange: generosity, alliance, partnership between equals. Gebo binds two people through an honest trade - a present, a pact, a love where the giving and the taking come out even. What is offered here carries weight, and accepting it is part of the bargain. Where this rune falls, both hands are usually full.
The shadow side
Gebo is symmetrical, so turning it leaves the same sign and there is no reversed position. Every force still has its dark edge. Gebo does not reverse, the rune is symmetrical. Its shadow lives in the unequal exchange: a gift with conditions attached, dependency, a debt used to tie somebody down. In hard company it asks you to name what is quietly being expected in return. An even trade survives being said out loud.
Gebo in a spread
If it comes up upright, read it by the meaning above. You cannot turn it, the sign is symmetrical, so here the neighbours matter: which runes fall beside it and where they lean. A single rune gives you the leaning, and for an answer with a thread through it you draw three: what is behind, what is now, what comes ahead.
Gebo as a talisman
Gebo is the rune of union and honest exchange, worn for an even partnership and love that comes back to you. As a talisman it draws generosity from fate, firm alliances and gifts that arrive by merit. As a charm it guards against self-interest, lopsided deals and ties that drag you down. Given at an engagement, or worn by two as a sign of equal union.
FAQ
Is the Gebo rune a good sign or a bad one?
Runes do not split into good ones and bad ones. Gebo speaks of gift, exchange, and in a spread it hints at where the force is leaning. It is no final sentence, and a lot depends on which runes fall beside it.
Does the Gebo rune have a reversed meaning?
No. Gebo is symmetrical, so turning it leaves the same sign. Every force still has its dark edge though, and the shadow side of Gebo is explained above.
Which aett does Gebo belong to?
The aett of Freyr, one of the three groups of the Elder Futhark, eight runes each. The aett tells you which octave the rune sits in and which runes it neighbours.
The rune said its piece in short. The arcana tell it more slowly.
