How it is calculated
The Lüscher color test rests on the idea that picking a color is almost unconscious and mirrors how you feel. You lay the eight colors out from the most pleasant to the least, and the order is read by position. The first ones show what you're drawn to, the last ones show what you're turning away from.
What the eight colors mean
Blue
Calm, depth, a need for closeness and stability. In the longings: you're reaching for calm and warm closeness, longing for peace and a steady shoulder to lean on. In the rejection: you're pushing calm away, and it looks like peace and closeness are in short supply right now, and that quietly gnaws at you.
Green
Willpower, persistence, a need for recognition. In the longings: you want to assert yourself and what's yours, earn recognition and hold your ground. In the rejection: you're tired of holding the line and proving something, and your willpower is running on empty.
Red
Energy, action, passion. In the longings: you're full of strength and eager to act, to chase things down and live vividly. In the rejection: your energy is running low and you want a breather, and the push feels like a weight right now.
Yellow
Optimism, hope, a pull toward the new. In the longings: you're open to new things and change, living on the hope that something better is coming. In the rejection: your hope for an easier ride has dimmed, and change brings more tiredness than joy right now.
Violet
Sensuality, daydreams, a wish to enchant. In the longings: you're drawn to the sensual and the dreamy, wanting to be liked and to enchant. In the rejection: you're in no mood for games or charm, and you've set the dreamy side aside.
Brown
Bodily comfort, safety. In the longings: you're reaching for coziness, physical rest and a sense of safety. In the rejection: caring for your body and comfort isn't a priority right now, and you're pushing it aside.
Black
Refusal, protest, boundaries. In the longings: you want to say «no», shield yourself and set some boundaries. In the rejection: you've no urge to break things off or cut them short, and extremes and protest feel foreign right now.
Grey
Neutrality, keeping your distance. In the longings: you want to wall yourself off and stay uninvolved, to take a pause from everything. In the rejection: you don't want to stay on the sidelines, you're itching to jump in and take part.
Frequently asked
How do you take the Lüscher color test?
You'll see eight colors. Pick the one you like most, then the most pleasant of the rest, and so on down to the last. That order is your result. The first colors show what you're drawn to, the last ones show what you're turning away from.
What do the colors mean in the Lüscher color test?
Each color is about a state of mind. Blue is calm and closeness, green is willpower and recognition, red is energy and action, yellow is hope and novelty. But the meaning of a color comes from its place, so the same blue near the start and near the end says very different things.
How accurate is the Lüscher color test?
It's a popular, elegant method, but its scientific rigor is debated. The result shifts with your mood and doesn't always repeat. Treat it as a mirror for how you feel right now and a reason to listen to yourself. It isn't a strict diagnosis.
Why can't you pick the colors the «right» way?
The test only works while your choice stays honest and quick. Don't think about which color is «good», just go with the one that's easiest on the eye right now. That's the whole point. Your hand reaches for a color before your head kicks in.
